Wonderful people, wild landscape and lots of tradition... one of the few ever recorded from inside as celebrations last days and nights and locals prefer be a bit isolated from outer world.
Ikaria is a very special island in Greece with great history and tradition in the far east of the Mediterranean Sea. It is "the island of long life", as people there live much longer than everywhere else in the world and remain physically active deep into their 90s.
In early 16th century in order to stay hidden from pirates, inhabitants moved to the highlands and mostly stayed awake and work during night. This is actually reflected till nowadays, as in most villages life begins after noon and lasts long after midnight.
Of course, most younger ikarians now live and work in big Greek cities or abroad. Also, locals begun to invest in tourism. Ikarians are very tight together and do not forget their homeland. Most feel "more
